About the project

Some of the Between Moscow and Saint-Petersburg materials are still at unclepasha.com/
moscow_to_st-petersburg.htm

This site as first conceived was to present just the City of Staritsa (Starica), Tver region, thus the name. Then I started adding information on other places one could conceivably visit while travelling between Moscow and St. Petersburg, and liked how it looked, and resolved to dump information and observations from my travels in this region to the www.staritsa.info site.

I've also included the Golden Ring cities, which can be incorporated into an extended version of the Moscow to St. Petersburg itinerary.

Send me your stories. In fact I entertain hope that the connoisseurs of Russian north-west will quickly help me fill this site. I'll be delighted to add your reports and pictures. Just remember that I spend a good deal of my life in areas with 9.6bps 10 cents/min. internet access, so ask before sending anything bulky.

I try to collect and compile information with an independent budget travellers in mind. Presently I aim for basic practical facts like where to stay or how to buy bus tickets. As the project expands you may see more personal stories and pictures and reflections to give you a sense of being here.

Each city description starts with "Free associations". These come from the nooks and crevices of my mind and from asking people, usually my dacha guests, after their third vodka, what comes to mind when they hear of a certain city.

Materials that apply to the whole region will be kept HERE.

Moscow and St. Petersburg themselves are NOT included. For Moscow see my www.cheap-moscow.com. There also is a page with St. Petersburg accommodation offers somewhere on that site. The aim of the present site, www.staritsa.info, is to bring out information not yet available in the Internet. At least not in English. So I will be concentrating on interesting but yet undocumented places.

  About the author
The creative mind, technical support, information gathering and processing, photos and drawings etc. are mostly by Paul Voytinsky ("Uncle Pasha"), who pretends to be a peasant from the village of Dubrovki near Staritsa. Most of what I did in the last 10 years can be found if you do some archeology starting with my old site  www.unclepasha.com.

This is me pretending to be some sort of a visionary. The irony is, a few years ago when I was still full of ideas, I looked like a wimp of a boy. Now, a ruin of a man, I got this silly Roman nose growing, and a dignified philosopher appearance.

  The hidden agenda
It is to to entice you to my dacha near Staritsa as a source to make a $25/day contribution to my project in exchange for a roof over your head, something to eat, and all-you-can-eat horse riding.

I can also be hired as a driver, fixer, interpreter, and all-around assistance. I can gather information for you, locate the right people, schedule appointments, look after you during your trip, and do follow-up work.
