Need anything in Klin?
I travel through Klin regularly on my way to my dacha near
Staritsa and can
run errands in Klin at no major time outlay to me or expense to you. Same applies to other
cities between Moscow & Staritsa:
Istra, Volokolamsk,
Rzhev, [Zubtsov],
and of course Tver. |

Accommodation

Gostiny Dvor Hotel ul. Dzerzhinskogo 4, tel. 8-09624-25313, near the
well-known Alex Cafe. 400-600 roubles ($14-21) for a very basic room, with part
of the facilities down the corridor, and the other part one floor down, then thought
the door, then up etc. Friendly and helpful stuff however. If travelling towards
Moscow and too tired to complete the last ugliest and heaviest part of the journey, stop in Klin. Turn right at the "Volokolamsk" sign, drive a block or two, and turn
right again. Ask the locals to point you to the "Cafe Alex". This
hotel is a few steps from the bus station and probably from the train station
too but I haven't checked for the reason if bitter cold.

There is a report,
unconfirmed, that you can stay in a "sanatorium" near Klin. Recommended for

Tourist Base "Sputnik" 20-30km beyond Klin if
moving from Moscow along the Moscow to Saint Petersburg highway.
Safely
In response to my question if it is safe to go out for a beer around
midnight the hotel clerks answered that "Klin is run by mafia, and mafia is
tough on street hooligans". Reassured, I went out, had one beer in a seedy
drinking establishment in a shack by the city market, admired faces and
characters there, and returned to the hotel room well and under a nice buzz.
