Pomeranye

Other possible spellings: Pomeran'ye, Pomeranie, Pomeranje.

80km from St. Petersburg or still to go to St. Petersburg, depending on which direction you travel.

The local woman from the porcelain factory, to whom I had given a ride to the next village (Lubava?) said that the place was established in the times of Catherine the Great (who ruled somewhere in the second half of the 18th century, the time of Potemkin, the Pugachev uprising, and first attempts to introduce the concept of "all people are created equal" in Russia) and was known for high death rate, thus the name. "Pomeret" means "to die", "Pomeranie", although not a proper word, sounds as "the process of dying". In reality the place was named by German colonists from the Pomerania.

The reason to stop at Pomeraine is the porcelain factory located in the old station house. Behind a dust-covered "clay pots" sign I a collection of inexpensive and very pleasant pots and bowls and vases. Recommended if you are out for practical souvenirs. The rainbow that appeared shortly after I left Pomeran'ye served as a background for this page.
