V 1360-e gody na etom meste poselilsja otshelnik -
monah Sergij iz sosednego goroda Radonezh. On osnoval monastyr Svjatoj
Troicy, svoimi rukami vykopal svjatoj istochnik. V 1380 Sergij
Radonezhskij blagoslovil russkie vojska na Kulikovskuju bitvu s tatarami
i poslal na vojnu dvuh monahov (odin iz nih, Peresvet, srazhalsja bez
kopia i mecha, nanosja udary krestom).
V 1608-1609 godah monastyr, imevshij kamennye steny,
vyderzhal 11-mesjachnuju osadu polsko-litovskogo vojska. Dvoe
krestjan, uanav, chto poljaki vedut pod stenu podkop, vzorvali ego i
vzorvalis sami. Im stoit pamjatnik u vorot.
V 1918 bolsheviki zakryli monastyr, no v 1943
Stalin, privlekaja Pravoslavnuju Tserkov na svoju storonu vo vremja
World War II, razreshil otkryt' obitel' i Duhovnuju academiju pri nej.
Sergieva Lavra stala mestom prebyvania russkogo patriarcha.

Where is Sergiev Posad?
First "Golden Ring" city, about an hour north-east
from Moscow. Close to the Abramtsevo Estate.

Hotel Zagorsk,
tel. 24226 or 24226. The city's main hotel is presently closed
for a major renovation. Expected to re-open within a couple of years. Security
guards downstairs kindly supplied me and my guests with phone numbers and price
information on other hotels, and helped finding a rooms on a busy weekend night.
Expected price range after re-opening: "popular".
Note easy wheelchair access.
Hotel Aristocrat, 48021 or 48021.
Excellent view. Located by the lookout point across the convent. $50-120
price range. No credit cards. Some staff speak English. May be a bit
noisy on weekends.

Zvezdochka (Little Star), 40853. The biggest after
the presently-closed Zagorsk Hotel. Located behind the train station. Shared facilities. 500
rouble ($15-18) rooms!!
Russkiy Dvorik (Russian Backyard), 54-75392 /7539.
$70-140 price range, meals included. Their leaflet says "Russian provincial" style but their staff
speak fluent English and credit cards are accepted.

Safely. A well-do to Moscow region community, so the risk level is probably
on the low side. Streets "feel" safe and people appear relaxed.
