XII века, но пережил экономический расцвет лишь во времена Петра
Великого (здесь производились льняные паруса и пеньковые канаты для
русского флота). Во время II World War город 6
раз переходил из рук в руки, в боях за него погибло около 400 тысяч
человек. Удар Красной Армии под Ржевом в ноябре 1942 года не дал Гитлеру
перебросить подкрепления под Сталинград. Почти все исторические
памятники города погибли в этих боях.

Location: Rzhev is
almost on the Moscow to Riga
highway, 120km from Moscow, about 50 km from Staritsa.
Among things that make
Rzhev famous is its reputation of a crime capital of the Tver region, a
slaughterhouse of which even the hardened locals speak with horror, and its role
in stopping the German tanks in 1941-42. In the spring of 2005 Rzhev was in the
news a lot in connection with a couple hundred cases of hepatitis from drinking
locally bottled soft drink or beer, and several oil cisterns falling off the
bridge into the Volga river. Or it may have been Vazuza. Not sure. There are
unconfirmed rumours to the effect that hepatitis was organized to bring down the
price of Rzhev brewery to buy it cheap, and the railroad accident was part of
the scheme to bring down the local government. She favourite pastime of Rzhev
young men, most of whom shave their heads and sport excessive muscle mass, is to
stand in groups of 6-7 in front of cigarette kiosks. Of all places between
Moscow and St. Petersburg Rzhev is the only one that gives me creeps. The old
Russian tradition of fist fights is said to be alive and well in Rzhev. Up two 150 young
men from each side may participate but usually the number of fighters is 15-20.
On an average winter 2-3 major fights may take place, and during holidays
smaller ones may even happen several days in a raw.
Accommodation comes
in the form of Rzhev Hotel near the bridge, on the Staritsa side of the river. A
busy and noisy place, complete with a casino. Rooms are from .... to......
Of things positive, I
will mention two-seater extra-light
airplanes that are manufactured in Rzhev. The factory is located in the
outskirts of Rzhev from the Staritsa side. Last time I asked, which was in
the fall of 2005, the basic model was around $9000. Flying courses available.
