Zubtsov, Tver region

If travelling north west on the Riga Highway the second second "provincial" town after Volokolamsk will be will be Zubtsov on the Vazuza river. By "town" I consider anything with a hotel and a restaurant where you can order a proper meal. You will pass through Zubtsov if travelling towards the Baltic Sea (Riga, Vilnius, Tallinn) or going to my Dacha near Staritsa.

Hotel

Zubtsov is just that distance from Moscow when road fatigue may take a hold of you. That's why I will present the hotel, where I stayed several times. On entering Zubtsov you'll cross the Vazuza river

nd then see a tank on your left. The hotel and the restaurant are opposite to it, to your right.

The hotel is quite inexpensive. $10 will get you a bed but if there are few clients, as is usually the case weekdays off-season, for that price you'll get one whole room. The telephone is 8-262-22824. Reservations  are accepted.

The restaurant is in the same building.

If the restaurant is already closed (in a true provincial fashion it works till about 7pm!) there is a bar in a hotel where you can get a shot or two of vodka with a minimalist snack. Enough to make you fall asleep.

Bus station

Within easy reach from Zubtsov: Shakhovskaya back to Moscow, Rzhev, Tver, Ostashkov. Lots of traffic to or from Moscow. 3-4 busses to Tver daily. The schedule, in Russian, is reproduced below.

Things to see

These include a War Memorial. The area between Zubtsov and Rzhev saw some intense tank battles in 1941-42.
