A small town (population 11-12 thousand) on the Riga highway, 200km north-west
from Moscow.
Things to see include a War Memorial. The area between Zubtsov and Rzhev was the site of intense tank battles in 1941-42. Zubtsov is at the Volga and Vazuza river, and very close to the Vazuza water reservoir. Stop here if you enjoy seeing and contemplating water works. The distance to Staritsa is 45km but given the difficulty of getting from Staritsa to my dacha, especially at night, it often makes sense to spend the night in Zubtsov, in the municipal "Submarina" hotel. The hotel called so because its manager served as a submarine sailor in his younger days. [photos of the hotel] Tel. 8-262-22824. Reservations accepted, 10% extra. Beds from 170 roubles ($6) per night. Submarina's best double room is 770 roubles ($28-29).
